Parent Pick-up @ MHS: U-Turns on Martin St.
Good evening,
We have received reports regarding drivers in the student pick-up line on Martin Street, in front of MHS, making abrupt U-turns as school buses exit and travel toward the intersection of Martin St. and Main St.
While U-turns are not expressly prohibited in this area, Massachusetts law requires all operators to exercise due care when starting, stopping, backing, or turning, and to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic. These maneuvers, when done abruptly or without sufficient clearance, create a safety concern—particularly when buses carrying students are involved.
As a reminder, drivers have an alternative route available by continuing forward and turning left onto Dewey Street, which provides access to North Main Street in either direction.
We understand that afternoons can be busy as families transition to home and other activities. However, safety must remain the priority. Please use caution and avoid turning in front of buses unless it is clearly safe to do so. School buses require a significantly longer stopping distance than passenger vehicles, and the safety of students on board is paramount.
Thank you for your cooperation and attention to this matter.
Respectfully,
SRO Piscitelli
