3rd Grade

Third Grade LOVED celebrating our last day before February break with another calm and cozy book-in.  It warmed our hearts to see the amount of “Woolie Book Love” in our classrooms!

4th Grade

Fourth grade had a fabulous time at their field trip to Gillette.  We learned about the history of football and how to have team spirit. Students were actively engaged in a STEM activity. During this activity, the students had to work together to build a “helmet” out of recycled materials that would not break when a ball was dropped onto it. They really enjoyed working on this with their classmates.

5th Grade

In science class, 5th graders have been learning about Changes in Matter.  Students determined the difference between a mixture and a solution by making Kool-Aid and Trail Mix.  Thank you to all who donated to make our activity a success!  Students also designed and built a water filter to clean dirty water, and were so excited to see their hard work come to life!

6th Grade

Our sixth graders enjoyed working on our Social Studies, called “Postcard from Africa.” Each student chose to “visit” an African country of their choice, complete research on the country, and design a postcard to send to their class that details the local geography, culture, and environment. It was a fantastic way for student to show off their problem-solving skills as they research how people in different regions adapt to their surroundings, like how communities near the Nile River, or Sahara Desert use their natural resources to thrive.

As a project, it wove together many different skills students have been working on in both ELA and in Social Studies: mastering map skills and human geography, while also practicing how to write clear, informative paragraphs and use new vocabulary. Plus, there was a big focus on creativity and student choice. Ask your sixth grader to show you the postcard they designed - they’ve done some creative work with these projects!

Band Instrument Donation Program

Do you have a band instrument that is no longer being used?

The band program at Shaw Elementary would like to provide the opportunity for every student, regardless of financial need, to learn how to play an instrument.

What type of donations are needed?

We are interested in brass, percussion, and woodwind instruments that are typically used in the elementary school band setting such as flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and snare drum.

Does the age and condition of the instrument matter?

Yes!  Trying to learn how to play an instrument that does not work properly can be frustrating for a student. For this reason, we need to limit instrument donations that are of brand name (not purchased online or through a box store), in good to excellent condition, and no more than 15 -20 years old.

How do I make my donation?

Instrument donations may be dropped off with the Shaw Elementary office staff to be forwarded to Mr. Rollins.
